ReflectionsParticipating in Outward Bound was one of the most transformative experiences of my life. I embarked on their courses seeking adventure but found so much more – challenges that tested me physically, mentally, and emotionally, ultimately fostering profound personal growth. Through the generosity of the Wilderness Skills Fund scholarship, I had the opportunity to attend two Outward Bound courses when I was 16 and 17 years old. My first time attending I spent 2 weeks mountaineering in the Colorado Rockies and the second course I spent 2 weeks rafting and canyoneering in Utah.
Physically, the Outward Bound courses pushed me beyond my limits. From navigating rugged terrains to conquering daunting rock faces, each day presented new physical challenges. The rigorous activities demanded resilience and determination, forcing me to dig deep and discover strengths I never knew I possessed. Whether it was carrying heavy packs through unforgiving landscapes or paddling against the current in wild rivers, every obstacle became an opportunity to push myself further and redefine my boundaries. The wilderness stripped away the familiar comforts of modern life, leaving me exposed to nature's raw beauty and unpredictable elements. In those moments of solitude, I confronted my fears and insecurities, learning to trust my instincts and embrace uncertainty. The mental resilience cultivated during those long days and nights in the wilderness became invaluable, shaping my mindset both on and off the trail. Through it all, Outward Bound provided the perfect opportunity for personal growth. It challenged me to confront my limitations, adapt to unfamiliar environments, and embrace the inherent discomfort of growth. As I navigated the rugged landscapes and introspective moments, I discovered reservoirs of resilience, courage, and determination within myself. In retrospect, my Outward Bound journey was not just about conquering mountains or traversing wilderness; it was about discovering the depths of my own potential and the transformative power of embracing discomfort. Today, I carry the lessons learned and the memories forged during those unforgettable days in the wild, forever grateful to the Wilderness Skills Fund scholarship for the opportunity. - Michele Simaitis 2005 – Outward Bound Colorado Backpacking and Mountaineering 2006 – Outward Bound Arizona Rafting & Canyoneering |
